How to Finish Outdoor Cedar Furniture

To have outdoor pieces that last you more than a lifetime, learn how to how to finish outdoor cedar furniture. Cedar is widely known throughout the country as one of the most durable hard woods and one of the best choices for outdoor furniture. Dead trees that have been out in the elements for over 100 years are still harvestable and produce usable wood, which is great for this purpose.

  1. First: The natural approach

Cedar has natural oils within the wood that prevent it from decaying. Your furniture is able to withstand harsh weather all on its own and it is very affordable to seal your pieces. Most people enjoy the natural scent of cedar and even use it to cover up other odors. Cedar shavings are used for pet cages to absorb and eliminate odors.

  2. Second: Applying wood sealant

To keep the color of your wood lasting longer and preserve its original condition, it is advisable to apply a good wood sealant to all surfaces. Read the instructions on the sealant carefully and check that it is wood sealant or sealer, not varnish or lacquer. Varnishes are for indoor furniture use and do not protect your furniture from the elements.

  3. Third: Application and upkeep

Lightly sand your furniture before applying your sealant. Then apply it to all surfaces, including the parts that touch the ground. Let the furniture completely dry and add a second coat. Once dry, you are ready to use your outdoor furniture. Re-sand and apply new coats every one to two years for optimum upkeep.
