How to Paint Cedar Furniture

Before showcasing your pieces, learn how to paint cedar furniture for an even more stylish look. The first step in the process is deciding if you want to use a paint and how you want the finished product to look.

  1. First: The benefits of paint

Paint provides the best protection for cedar furniture against wear and tear, the sun, water and harsh climates. Plus, there are limitless options in paint colors and finishes. Since paint is opaque, it is great to use if the wood is already discolored or has previous stains. Paint your furniture as soon as you get it in order to prevent any damage.

  2. Second: Which paint to buy

For best results, use an exterior paint and an oil based primer. One hundred percent acrylic paint lasts the longest, even for several years but once you notice chips or bubbling, refinish the entire piece to ensure no water or sun damage occurs especially for outdoor furniture. If the wood is already treated, you are ready to begin painting. If the is not treated, add a primer to prevent mold from developing.

  3. Third: Refinishing or changing previously painted furniture

If you want to change the color of your furniture or have bought used furniture, easily reseal, protect and change the color of the new pieces. Simply peel or chip off what paint you can and sand down the rest with a medium grain sand paper. Wipe off with a cloth to get rid of any excess dust. Once the surface is roughed up and has an even texture, apply your new coat of paint.
